Day Camps

The Cowan Community Center is proud to offer four weeks of day camp this summer!   Besides the music school, in 2018 we will also offer:

debra fieldsArt on the Creek Camp, June  11-15, 2018.  Led by visual artist and educator Debra Fields, kids and grown ups can get creative.  Look forward to watercolor with Jeff Chapman-Crane,  creating with materials from nature with Debbie Tuggle Pendley, puppet-making with Kim Carden, clay sculpture and painting working from nature, and field trips.

Farms on the Creek Camp, July 9-13 , will offer hands-on fun in the garden, field trips to local farms and the farmer’s market, and cooking with local chefs daily.  Directed by Valerie Horn of Grow Appalachia and Community Farm Alliance along with master gardeners.  All ages and anyone who eats is welcome!

Headwaters on the Creek Camp, July 23-27, 2018 will let kids explore their big world.  Look forward to hands-on stream biology, a first look through a microscope, exploring nature and stream ecosystems and lots of amazing experiments.  We are proud to partner with Headwaters to offer enrichment in earth sciences for Letcher County kids ages 5 to 12.  Coordinated by Alex Beer of Headwaters, Inc.    photo (10)

Information for Parents:

All day camps begin at 9:00 am and end at 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday at the Cowan Community Center. Registration will begin at 8:30 am on Monday and parents/guardians will need to stay a few minutes to sign permission slips. Nutritious morning snacks and lunch will be served each day.  We are pleased to serve as a site for the USDA summer feeding program for youth under 18 in Letcher County.  Classes will be offered concurrently for two levels: 4 to 7 and 8 to 12 year olds.  Classes for teens and adults will be available during the art camp.  Thanks to a generous grant from the Berea College Appalachian Fund and other donors, there will be no cost for students.  Letcher County students attending the music school will receive full scholarships through the bequest of Nancy and Harvey McClellan and the CCMMS Youth Scholarship Fund.
