Charity Gilbert is a singer-songwriter who calls Clay County, Kentucky home and draws from her Eastern KY roots in the music she plays and writes. She was recently named a 2024 Firestarter by the Kentucky Foundation for women for her songwriting and was also the recipient of the 2023-2024 Red Foley Award at Berea College. Aside from her personal music, she has played in the Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble and was the president of the College Folk-Roots Ensemble in her time at Berea. It was also in her time at Berea when she met her bandmate and Kids on the Creek co-teacher, Sophie Delaney. After singing together and discovering how well their voices blended, they formed a duo called The Branchwater Belles and are still playing and singing together today. She has learned banjo, guitar, upright bass, and singing from tradition-bearers such as Randy Wilson, Sam Gleaves, Ruth McLain Smith, Ginny Hawker, and Kay Justice. She and Sophie look forward to meeting all of their students and sharing their knowledge! Join them for some pickin’, grinnin’, and good old-fashioned singin’!!
